Two Killed as Violence Breaks Out in Jos Metropolis
There was pandemonium in Jos North LGA of Plateau State, following a violent disturbance in some part of the metropolis caused by the murder of an unidentified civilian around Dutse Uku of the LGA Sunday afternoon.
Reports gathered that trouble began when the corpse of a male was found in the aforementioned area.
According to a source, “This has always been the trend in the area; once anyone crosses over to the other side, his or her safety was never guaranteed.
“These are Christian and Muslim communities that share boundaries.
“However, gunshots began renting the air from all sides with people running helter-skelter, including those coming back from Church,” the source said.
The source, who preferred to be anonymous, also said “houses were set ablaze within the borders of the crisis area”.
Our correspondent further gathered that one Mr Chuwang Michael was also killed in the ensuing violence.
As at the time of filing this report, security operatives (soldiers, mobile policemen and others) have been drafted to the area and normalcy is beginning to be restored with people being advised to remain indoors.
Meanwhile, the police have confirmed that there were fresh disturbances in Dutse Uku area and environs.
According to the spokesman of the state police command, DSP Matthias Terna Tyopev, “We have mobilised our personnel to the area. As we speak, the Area Commander Jos Metro is on ground there.”
Also, the State Peace Building Agency, through its Director-General, Joseph Lemgmang, confirmed the deployment of troops to the troubled areas.
Lengmang however called for “vigilance and relevant security information”.
